“Chains of habit are too light to be felt, until they are too heavy to be broken.” -Warren Buffett

“Champions don’t do extraordinary things. They do ordinary things, but they do them without thinking, too fast for the other team to react.  They follow the habits they’ve learned.” -Charles Duhigg

The power of habits in our lives cannot be overstated. It is central to what we make of our lives.  In order to lead a successful, productive and happy life, we need to eliminate these 4 habits that hinder success.

  1. Inability to delay gratification: Delayed gratification is a key principle that differentiates successful people and others. The ability to invest money today instead of consuming it as you would rather have is delayed gratification. The ability to sacrifice for greater reward in the future instead of consuming a smaller reward today is delayed gratification.  Next time you have the impulse to splurge on the next shiny object, consider delaying the consumption for a more appropriate time.

  1. Inability to say “No” to good ideas: On your path to success, you will be confronted with a lot of good ideas. As you become increasingly successful, more opportunities will be presented to you. There will always be the temptation to want to say “Yes” to every good idea.  Successful people are focused and do not get distracted by every idea.  “The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say No to almost everything.” -Warren Buffett. Steve Jobs once proclaimed that “People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all.  It means saying to the the hundred other good ideas that there are.  You have to pick carefully. I’m actually as proud of the things we haven’t done as the things I have done.  Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.”

  1. Avoid seeking comfort: When you do easy things, life becomes hard. When you do hard things, life becomes easy. As humans, our tendency is to seek the path of least resistance.  Truly successful people embrace the pain, they embrace the challenge, they have grit and perseverance to pursue difficult tasks. In our ever more cautious and competitive world, there is little security in playing safe.  Being willing to give up the familiarity of the know and embrace the discomfort that comes from being outside your comfort zone is increasingly crucial to your success in work and life. -Margie Warrell.

  1. Avoid Indecisiveness & Procrastination: A good plan violently executed now is better that a perfect plan executed next week. -George S. Patton. Successful people understand the value of time and the cost of indecision. They do not wait until they have all the answers before making a decision.  Rich people do things Now, Average people do things Soon, while Poor people do things Never.
