The idea of working 9-5 at a job with limited potential for exponential growth makes a lot of people very uncomfortable.  However, most people naturally leave school and begin working at a 9-5 job.  They secretly hate the job and want to leave but now they have several bills, kids, and a lifestyle to maintain.  The fear or inability to leave their job cripples them.  Here are a few tips on how to start a business while still at your 9-5.

  1. Learn an applied skill set : Spend an hour a day, 5 days a week learning an applied skill set. A skill set such as computer programming, SEO, insurance license, soccer coach, freelance writing, product development, social media marketing, real estate investing etc.  Set the same time everyday and resist the temptation to cancel this time for something else.  Get rid of your phones or anything that can be distracting. Give yourself a deadline to begin putting your new skill set to work in the marketplace.  I highly recommend doing this an hour before going to your regular 9-5.

  1. Develop a Plan of Action and Milestone (POAM) to execute this. Put together a plan of study or practice, and mark it with a deadline.  This plan of study or practice should show progression in your study and should end with a market launch deadline.

  1. Seek out clients and customers by reaching out to your friends and family first, then people in your community and sphere of influence. You can also reach out to generic work sites such as elance, upwork, thumbtack etc.

  1. Build up your savings from the new acquired skill and your 9-5 income. There is nothing worse than trying to build a business when you are starving.  Not having any savings can cause you to take shortcuts in your business which could cost you significantly in the future.  Having some savings will help ease the transition.

  1. Seek partners to help you grow, market your business and scale. No one succeeds alone.  You need partners to help you becomes successful at your new business.
