Dear Friends,

As we approach the new year, we often look to make new year resolutions, set goals and seek to make positive changes in our lives.  Here are four steps on how to make and embrace change successfully.

  1. Set Big Goals: As we begin the new year, we are often tempted to set small goals so that we increase our odds of accomplishing them.  However, in some instances, setting big achievable goals is more beneficial and plausible than setting small ones.  The problem with small goals is that it often slows down our ascent to our highest potential or worse, completely hinder us from reaching our highest potential.  Take for instance, that John has always wanted to start a multi-national corporation, but he sets his goals low initially, he decided to get a job at the local manufacturing plant in order to raise capital.  John was really successful at the manufacturing plant, he was promoted rapidly and has a huge salary.  However, now John has obligations, a mortgage, car payment, children’s private school tuition etc and he cannot afford to take the chance to go and seek the multi-national corporation.  He has traded the Good for the Great.  This can be applied to several things in our lives.  Set BIG GOALS up front and work tirelessly to achieve them.

  1. Focus on your Goals, not what can go wrong: We have the tendency on playing the scenarios of everything that can go wrong.  What if I don’t succeed?  What if I get ridiculed?  What if I fail?  However, we should be fixated on What if I succeeded?  What if I pulled it off?  What would that mean for my family and my community?  The bottom line is if you do not try then you have already failed.  So what the heck, focus on your goals, focus on success and give it a go.

  1. Share Your Ideas and Seek Leverage: Big goals are not accomplished alone.  You have to recruit the help of lots of people,  you need staff, contractors, technology, mentors, gurus etc.  There will always be 3% of the people you meet that can and are willing to help you accomplish your goals.  The task is for them to know that you need help. They cannot help you if they do not know what your goals are.  So you have to share it with them.  Some of us are afraid of sharing our ideas out of fear that our ideas will be stolen.  I can assure you that no one can steal your ideas because no one can execute them as well as you can.  No one as your contacts, No one has your passion and drive, No one understands your destination and the routes and detours you need to get there.  People might try to copy their version of your idea but no one can steal your idea.  If Bill Gates told you exactly what steps he took to become the richest man in the world, chances are you still cannot execute as well as he did.

  1. Break it down to Actionable tasks and Attack. The final step is to break your BIG goal down to actionable plan bound by time and then attack.  How do you eat an elephant?  One bite at a time.  In order to accomplish a big goal, you need to break it into pieces and start accomplishing one task after the other.  Develop a Plan of Action and Milestones.
