Rich people do things Now, Average people do things Later, Poor people do things Never. Which are you? Procrastination and Indecision plays a big role on how successful we become in life. As George Canning said, “Indecision and delays are the parents of failure”.
Rich people make decisions quickly and are slow to reverse course, while poor people make decisions slowly and are quick to reverse course.
3 causes of Procrastination and Indecision.
- Overwhelmed: This is one of the biggest causes of procrastination. Just thinking about all the things we have to do can paralyze anyone from doing anything. Making a list of what we need to do and prioritizing them using the Eisenhower Matrix, then do only one thing at a time until it is completed or impeded. Another tool that the rich use to overcome feeling overwhelmed is outsourcing and leverage. Once you have made your list, outsource what will be better performed by someone else.
- Complexity: Complex tasks are daunting and lead to procrastination and indecision. An antidote to complexity is to break down a complex task to small, actionable tasks and focus on the small tasks one at a time instead of focusing on the bigger project. Take for instance, if you desire to start a logistics company. Instead on focusing on the full task, break it down to registering the company name, then talk to mentors to learn industry “best practices”, source for projects, procure vehicles, get licenses and required insurance, hire staff etc.
- Motivation: This is a big one. Sometimes, we just will rather do other things. I will rather hang out with my friends on Friday Night and watch the NBA finals than work on that proposal for a new job. I will rather do anything else in the world, than make those extra 10 cold calls for new clients. However, if we looked at the task from the reward it would produce rather than the pain it exerts, we might have more motivation to tackle it. If I made 10 more phone calls, I could get 3 more deals which would afford me the opportunity to take a trip to Europe or help pay for my wedding without incurring debt.
A good plan violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan executed next week. -George S. Patton
