In chapter 7 of my new book “Success Made Simple”, we discussed the concept of Organization and Accountability. The main idea is that an ordinary person can achieve extraordinary things if he were organized and accountable.
As I was conducting the research for the book, I saw several articles and anecdotes giving people “Steps to holding yourself accountable”. However, this is a fallacy. It is absolutely impossible for anyone to hold themselves accountable.
How many times have you made a new year resolution and have broken it before MLK day? How many times have you promised to work out religiously? Even the most disciplined people cannot hold themselves accountable.
Some people believe that it only takes forming a habit to keep yourself accountable, but even this does not work. As a US Military Officer, we have seen several people in boot camp create a habit of working out everyday while in some form of training or under the direction of an authority, but once they leave the training, they try to keep the habit going but fall short as soon as “life happens”.
Since we have established that you can accomplish extraordinary success with Organization and Accountability, then what do we need to ensure we are accountable.
- You need to develop a rigid system that will make it impossible to digress from your goal. This is very hard to do because most systems are not punitive or are too forgiving. The only way to stay accountable under this remedy is to be succumbed to an unforgiving system. No one can be trusted to be accountable by their own will.
- The second remedy, which is more plausible is to get a coach, or an authority that is employed to keep you accountable. In order to truly achieve greatness, we need a force outside of us to keep us accountable. In the military, we have the drill instructors to keep us in shape. In the sports world, we have coaches and personal trainers, and in the world of business, we have coaches and mentors. It is imperative, that you employ a personal coach if you are to truly achieve greatness. Do not think you can hold yourself accountable. You cannot.
